Defensive players wear large leather gloves to catch the ball, which look like oversized, thickened palms. Players at different positions use different shapes of gloves: the first baseman's glove is longer, and the catcher's glove is thicker. Gloves protect the palms well from being hurt by fast-flying balls. New gloves are usually stiff, but they will become soft and comfortable after practicing with them often.
