It isn't actually dark all the time; it's just hidden from our view. Because it gets bumped by asteroids more often, the far side has a lot more crowded craters and very bumpy terrain. Amazingly, China's Chang'e 4 probe achieved humankind's very first soft landing on the far side of the moon and sent back many precious photos for scientists to study its magical soil!
